How to Make a Science Project on Popcorn

Every popcorn kernel has a small amount of water inside. When the kernel is heated quickly, the water will turn to steam and push against the kernel causing it to pop. The following experiment will prove that there is indeed water in the center of the kernel.

Things You'll Need

  • 300 popcorn kernels
  • Air popcorn popper
  • Oven
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Count out 100 kernels of popcorn and pop them. Count how many actually popped. This trial is your control group.

    • 2

Count out another 100 kernels, and heat them for a few hours in an oven set a 220 degrees. Then, pop the kernels and count how many popped. This trial will show whether removing water from the kernels will help them pop better.

    • 3

Count out another 100 kernels, and soak them in water for a few hours. Then, pop the kernels and count how many popped. This trial will show whether adding water will help the kernels pop better.
