How to Make Simple Science Projects

Science fair projects can be time consuming and complicated. Parents and teachers can help younger students choose a simple science fair project to ensure the students don't become overwhelmed and stressed by the process. Choosing a simple project that is age appropriate can prevent a child from becoming frustrated, which allows him to learn the science concepts while still having fun. Following this step-by-step plan to selecting and completing a simple science project can help parents, teachers and students have a productive and positive science fair experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down a list of science topics of interest. Browse through children's science magazines for ideas.

    • 2

Research interesting science topics to help you select a project. Look for projects that other students have completed. It is permissible to replicate experiments that have been done before; part of scientific discovery is the replication of results.

    • 3

Choose a project that requires materials that are easily obtained from around the house, the grocery store or a retail store. This will reduce the frustration of looking for and purchasing specialized ingredients or equipment.

    • 4

Choose a project that has only a few steps that can be completed in one day. Projects with multiple, complicated steps are inappropriate for younger students, who may lose focus if their project is stretched out over several days.

    • 5

Write the introduction, methods section and hypothesis of your project. The methods section should be a step-by-step plan of exactly what you will do when you conduct your experiment. The hypothesis is what you think the results of your experiment will be.

    • 6

Make a list of everything that you will need to complete the project. Gather any materials that you have at home, and create a shopping list for everything else you will need. Make sure to include the materials you need to create your presentation, such as a poster board. This will reduce the stress of having to make multiple trips to purchase materials.

    • 7

Follow your methods section to complete your experiment. Take photos while you work, as these will make simple, easy additions to your presentation. Write down any observations that you make or data that you collect in one place, such as a science journal.

    • 8

Write your science paper. Make sure that you include the following sections: introduction, background information, hypothesis, methods section, results and discussion.

    • 9

Make your project's display. Include all of the sections of the paper that you wrote, photos that you took, or charts and graphs.
