How to Make a Fluid Force Project

If you've ever seen water shooting out of a broken sprinkler main, then you know that liquid can carry a significant amount of force with it. The force doesn't have to come from simple velocity, though -- it also has a force from its weight and from erosion, as the Grand Canyon dramatically attests. There are many different ways to demonstrate the force of liquid through simple experiments.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach one end of a tube to the opening of a resealable gallon storage bag. Use super glue to create a seal so that the connection is watertight.

    • 2

Set the bag on a flat surface, such as a table, and set a book on top of the bag.

    • 3

Fill a large pitcher with water. Put a funnel's tip into the other end of the tube.

    • 4

Pour water into the funnel, keeping the other end of the tube about the same height as the bag and the book. As you add water, you should see the book rise as the bag fills.
