How to Make a Egg Float Using Salt for a Science Project

The best way to interest children in science is through hands-on experiments. Many experiments can be thrown together in a matter of minutes using household items. One such experiment is making an egg float in water. This will seem like magic at first, but the wonder will give way to reason when you explain how density works. This experiment is safe, fun, and easy for children to perform. It is best for children who are about to start learning about density, sometime in the first grade.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an egg in a glass with fresh water. It will sink to the bottom.

    • 2

Add about five tablespoons of salt to the glass and mix it well. The egg should begin to rise to the surface. If it does not, add more salt.

    • 3

Explain that salt water is denser than fresh water, and that the density of the egg is somewhere in between. A denser liquid will flow underneath less-dense object, like an egg.
