The Snow Bear Book Activities

"The Snow Bear" follows the story of a young polar bear who loses his mother. He is unable to find her in the blankets of snow, and builds a polar bear out of the snow to keep him company. His friends try to keep him busy while he waits, but each one is called back to his home. At the end of the story, the young polar bear is reunited with his mother. Combining this book with fun activities can enhance the story's themes.
  1. Diary Entry

    • The young polar bear in the story feels sad and alone when he is unable to find his mother. Read the story with the child and ask him to imagine he is the polar bear in "The Snow Bear." Ask him to create an entry for the polar bear's diary. This entry should include information on what occurred during the story as well as feelings he likely felt while missing his mother. Use this activity as a way to evaluate a student's comprehension of the story.

    Cotton Ball Polar Bear

    • The polar bear in the book creates his own mother bear out of the snow. Study polar bears and their physical features by showing the child photos of real polar bears. Have her create her own polar bear using cotton balls. For a young child, provide her with a line drawing of a polar bear and allow her to glue cotton balls on the drawing. For an older child, encourage her to draw her own polar bear using the real photographs as a guide.

    Polar Bear Climate Study

    • Polar bears, like the one in the story, live in very specific chilly climates. Read "The Snow Bear" and discuss how the author generally explains the climate and setting in the book. Take the child to your school or local library and ask him to research further details about the climate where you can find polar bears. Have him write at least three facts he learned during the research process on sentence strips and display them in your home or classroom.

    Diorama of Favorite Scene

    • "The Snow Bear" contains beautiful illustrations by Maggie Keen. Read the story and point out the illustrator's techniques throughout the book. Discuss how pictures can enhance the words in a story. Ask the child to choose her favorite scene from the book and, using the illustrations as a guide, recreate this scene through a diorama. Provide her with an empty shoe box and craft materials to complete this assignment.
