How to Stand in Line at School

The sight of young children marching silently in step may be odd -- and maybe even a bit sad -- to some, but standing in line at school is necessary for several reasons. Many classrooms feature dozens of students and only one or two teaching professionals. The traditional school line helps overworked teachers keep track of their students while traveling and makes it possible for multiple classes to walk the halls at once. Other rules exist to keep children quiet and behaved, creating a conducive atmosphere for learning. The protocol for standing in line is fairly straightforward.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay behind the person standing in front of you -- your nose should align with the center of that person's head while you're facing forward. Keep within 12 inches of the person ahead of you while walking.

    • 2

Stay quiet. Talking creates a distraction for studying students as you pass their classrooms and may lead to disciplinary action.

    • 3

Keep your arms at your sides.

    • 4

Avoid horseplaying, which is not only prohibited, but also causes you to violate the other rules of standing in line.

    • 5

Listen for directions from your teacher. Unexpected situations may cause the line to have to stop quickly.
