How to Organize a Child's School Binder

Staying organized will help your child do well in school. If he can't find his homework assignments, he won't be able to complete them. At the start of the school year, prepare a three-ring binder so your child can keep track of the materials for each subject and keep all his school supplies in one place. Make space in the binder for materials you're sending into school with him, such as permission slips or doctor's notes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Insert tab dividers in your child's school binder and label them with each subject of her school day. Place them in the binder in order. For example, if she has science first period, place the tab divider for science in front of the other dividers.

    • 2

Put loose-leaf paper in the binder. You can put all the paper together in one stack at the front or back of the binder or divide the paper so that each tabbed section has a pile of paper.

    • 3

Create a place for parent-teacher correspondence. Depending on how old your child is, check this section nightly for new paperwork and place paperwork in it. If the binder has a pocket on the front, use that for parent-teacher correspondence. Otherwise, you can attach a binder clip or an envelope to the inside of the cover.

Fill a pencil pouch designed for a three-ring binder with pencils, pens, a pencil sharpener and other school supplies, such as a calculator or ruler. Put the pouch in the front of the binder, on top of the tab dividers and loose-leaf paper. Place a three-hole punch designed for three-ring binders on top of the pouch so your child can punch holes in any papers he receives right away.

    • 5

Put a planner at the front of the binder, just behind the pouch, so that your child can record her assignments and any activities she has coming up. Get a weekly planner so your child can see what she has due in the coming week.

Go through the binder with your child every week. Remove old assignments he doesn't need to carry to school every day and replenish the paper supply. Store the old assignments in a filing box at home.
