Choose an atom to replicate. Older elementary students may need to make more complex atoms, such as atoms higher than 11. Online periodic table of elements, as well as textbooks, have the number of protons, neutrons and electrons in each atom.
Create the nucleus by gluing jelly beans on the extruded polystyrene foam ball. Use one color jelly bean for neutrons and the other color for protons. Match the amount of jelly beans you use to the type of atom you are making.
Form the energy levels with pipe cleaners. Shape each pipe cleaner in a rough circle and string small beads on each ring to create electrons. The beads should be smaller than the jelly beans in the nucleus. Tie the ends of each pipe cleaner together to form closed rings.
Tie fishing wire around the nucleus. Tie the smallest electron shell to the fishing wire about 1 inch above the nucleus. Tie on the rest of the electron shells to the fishing wire. The nucleus should be in the middle, surrounded by the shells.
