How to Make a Model Nucleus

For a science project you may be asked to create a model of a nucleus. A nucleus lies at the center of an atom. It consists of protons and neutrons, which are commonly depicted as spheres in models, and diagrams. With a few small balls, and some hot glue you can quickly and easily assemble a model of a nucleus.

Things You'll Need

  • Small polystyrene foam balls
  • Paint in two colors
  • Hot glue gun

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an element for your project, and determine the number of protons and neutrons within the nucleus. For example, nitrogen has seven protons and seven neutrons.

    • 2

Count out a number of polystyrene foam balls equal to the number of protons within your nucleus. For example, you need seven balls for the protons in nitrogen.

    • 3

Paint the protons any color you choose. Set them aside to dry.

    • 4

Paint the remaining balls, representing the neutrons, in a different color. Set them aside to dry.

    • 5

Glue the balls together to create an abstract shape, alternating protons and neutrons.
