Software for the Learning Disabled

Parents and teachers are basically on their own when selecting software for persons with learning disabilities (LD). Consider the intended use of the software and whether it does what it claims to do.
  1. Reading

    • According to Dr. Scott Howard, the Kurzweil3000 reading program is a valuable tool for students with phonological dyslexia. The program allows the user to scan in text from a book and then reads the text back in a modulated voice. Virtual sticky notes and colored markers allow students to highlight important information.

    Math

    • Many LD students are visual learners and prefer to learn by visual demonstration. The best math software addresses math retention difficulties by presenting facts with pictures, stories, songs or rhymes to overcome the difficulty of traditional math memorization. Look for programs that offer clear feedback so the student is not left wondering whether or not his answer is correct.

    Tips

    • Writing and speaking software that uses word prediction and speech feedback is useful for those who have problems writing and editing. Many websites offer free downloads allowing you to sample their programs before purchasing.
