Adaptive Technology Software for Math

Not being able to see how a math problem is laid out or not being able to physically hold a pencil makes math challenging for people with disabilities. There are many adaptive computer technology software programs specially designed to help children and adults with disabilities learn arithmetic and its concepts and enable them to excel in math.
  1. Dictation Math Software

    • Metroplex Voice Computing makes Math Talk for people who are physically unable to type on a keyboard. This software allows you to speak your algebra, calculus and statistic calculations for college-level math courses into the computer. It also includes a graphing function. The same company makes a basic math software package so you can speak basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems using your computer and dictation software like DragonNaturally Speaking.

    Calculator Software

    • ViewPlus Technologies' Audio Graphing Calculator helps individuals who are vision-impaired or who have learning or motor disabilities. This computer-based software is an alternative to a hand-held scientific calculator. The calculator can speak to you through audio tones and cues. The calculator will also describe graph shapes. The calculator's print function allows you to print a tactile version so you can feel the graph in addition to hearing it.

    Alternatives for Pencils

    • Two products from HenterMath, Virtual Pencil (VP) Arithmetic and VP Algebra, assist people with learning disabilities or who are visually impaired. Basic math is covered in VP Arithmetic; VP Algebra is for exponents, radicals and Greek letters. In these programs you input calculations onscreen by moving the mouse or typing in numbers; a screen reader reads the calculation back. The program also can print the math problem in Braille. Students with learning disabilities often get confused by a standard keyboard; to deal with this problem, these programs are designed to be used with alternative keyboard overlays if necessary.

    Picture Math

    • Attainment Company makes several software programs for people with cognitive disabilities, including Counting Coins. This software uses pictures to help students understand and work with coin problems. Students can sort, match and solve money questions using pictures rather than standard numbers.

    Math Manipulatives

    • IntelliTools makes Classroom Suite 4 software for regular classroom use as well as for students with disabilities. This software includes reading, writing and creativity tools and early learning activities, in addition to math. In the Classroom Suite 4, students (grades pre-K through 5) learn numbers through manipulatives like number lines and skip counting on a number chart. This software works well with Cambium Learning Technologies' IntelliKeys. IntelliKeys is an alternative keyboard for students with cognitive, physical or visual disabilities. These keyboards are designed to work with Cambium software programs like MathPad and MathPad Plus, but can also be used for other software programs. They feature big letters, numbers and pictures to help students learn without using a standard keyboard.
