How to Teach Dance in Pre-K

Using music that preschoolers enjoy and simple, repetitive movements will help teach preschoolers to dance. Start with small movements, and as they master those, add another layer of movement to the same step. A catchy tune that is good for using repetitive movements is the Bee Gees' "Stayin Alive." The song, and a space large enough to accommodate your students, are all it takes to get started.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the children stand in a circle listening to "Stayin' Alive." As they listen, ask them to bend their knees up and down and pretend that their feet are stuck in cement and their arms are glued to their sides so that they cannot move them. Have them continue moving up and down bending their knees for about one minute of the song. This will help them to establish the rhythm of the song.

    • 2

Have the group move into a straight line facing the instructor. While they are moving their knees up and down have them mimic the instructor so that they are moving up and down in sync with each other. Tell them their arms are free now and have them clap on the down beat so that when they bend their knees they clap once. Repeat this step until they are in sync with each other. Having the instructor in front of them helps to get them moving together.

    • 3

Ask the students to free their feet from the cement by doing a side step out with each foot. This move is easily mirrored if you are doing it in front of them. On the beat they step one foot to the right, then place their feet together again and then step the other foot to the left. Their arms are to be still so tell them that they are glued to their side again. Continue with this side step until they are in sync with each other on the beat.

    • 4

Ask them to move their arms by rolling them around each other in front of them. This step should be done while they are bending their knees up and down at first. Once they are able to do the arm roll, have them add the side step they just learned.

    • 5

Ask them to stop and put their feet back into the cement and bend their knees up and down in rhythm to the beat as they free their arms and place them on their hips. Ask them to leave their left arm resting on their hip and reach up to the sky with the right arm, then reach up to the right with the left arm. Once they are able to make this arm move in sync ask them to slowly walk in a circle using the side step. They should move on four beats, making the circle so that they step right toward the circle four times. Step right, put feet together, and repeat. They should reach up with their left arm on each step.

Repeat the above steps for one minute each to the entire song. This exercise is an example of the types of movements preschoolers can do. Other music that has a driving beat may be used in place of "Stayin' Alive." Preschool Rock (Resource 1) may be a valuable resource for other ideas.
