How to Buy a Microfridge

Before you think big in regard to your college mini-fridge, check out the restrictions of the school you will be attending. Most schools have very specific requirements with regard to size and amps of the units you will be allowed to bring to your dorm. They generally do not allow independent microwave ovens, and instead suggest the micro-fridge combos that are small, convenient, and of low enough amperage not to trip the circuits of the building. The colleges also make it ever-so-convenient to rent the units directly from their vendor. What they generally don't let their incoming students know, however, is that for slightly more than a single semester rental charge, you could own the thing.

Find out the size and amp restrictions before you look for a unit. Many schools require 1.6 amps or less and 5.0 cubic feet or less. Additionally, check the room size. You'll want the largest unit allowed that fits in the space you have, and if your roommate is bringing his own, you may want to forgo the unit entirely. Two fridges take up too much space.

Look for the energy star rating. While you may not be heart-broken if the school is dishing out extra dollars to run your Microfridge, they are handy units to have at home and you'll want yours to be as energy-efficient as possible. Also, buying with an eye to its energy rating reduces your carbon footprint.
