How to Assess Preschoolers for a Teacher

It is important for teachers to know how to assess preschool students. According to the National Institute for Early Education Research, evaluating preschool students can help pinpoint special needs, alert parents about a child's progress, determine the curriculum's effectiveness and help identify ways to improve it. When evaluating preschoolers, be aware that preschool students have limited attention spans, so assessments need to be age appropriate.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an evaluation sheet or use a printed one. Re-teach has an evaluation sheet it allows teachers to use. If you create your own evaluation sheet, divide it into different skill sets. According to the Mayo Clinic, preschoolers can be assessed for social, cognitive, language and physical skills. Brainstorm activities that will allow you to test each skill.

    • 2

Select a skill to evaluate. Choose an activity for students to perform that tests the skills. For example, let the children have free play time. Observe how the children share toys and interact to evaluate social skills.

    • 3

Observe the children and take notes. Record specific actions, and evaluate the positive and negative aspects of what you see.

    • 4

Determine via your notes what efforts or modifications can help the child. Share your findings with the child's parents so you can work together to make improvements. Discuss ways to improve the evaluated skill, and monitor the child's progress.
