How to Be an Effective Teacher for Kids

Implementing effective teaching strategies is no simple task, and usually requires years of educator experience before truly mastering. When kids are enthusiastic about the material they are learning, and when each child gets the opportunity to learn one-on-one with a teacher to cover trouble areas, both the educator and parents will almost certainly observe improvement. Effective teaching strategies include classroom management, lesson building, regular assessment and mixed-mode activating strategies in instruction.

Instructions

    • 1

Construct a lesson plan that incorporates all required subjects according to state law. Be creative in subject matter, and tailor it to the tastes of the students. For example, a math teacher might construct a word problem for first graders that reads: "If Johnny has three fire trucks and Sally has three dump trucks, how many total trucks do Johnny and Sally have?"

    • 2

Incorporate current events and literature into approved lesson plans and extracurricular activities to get kids excited about learning. For example, a fifth-grade teacher might have the students read one of the Harry Potter books, and then after a series of discussions would show the corresponding movie to the class.

    • 3

Employ classroom management policies that encourage positive behavior. Be polite and caring with students, and use your politeness as an example of how students should treat each other in the classroom. A positive classroom leads to cooperation among students, and can boost learning.

    • 4

Use positive reinforcement with students who are struggling. Always tell students that they can accomplish their goals with help. Observe students' work regularly to find struggling students, and spend extra time after school or during recess with these students to help them overcome major obstacles. Send home notes to parents when a student should receive extra practice on a subject at home. Always encourage parents to take part in their child's education.

    • 5

Regularly assess student work and commit time to practice harder lessons. At the completion of each topic, write an original test that assesses the basic and more advanced principles behind the subject. A teacher that has just finished teaching section on genetics might include a week-ending quiz of Punnet square problems, for example.
