Mythology Characters Projects

Very few cultures have no folkloric tradition, yet probably the best known to most school children is the system of gods and goddesses of Greek mythology. While these are by no means the only immortals identified in ancient history, their personalities are largely indicative of those in other mythology systems. The characters tend to be strong and self-centered, given to angry outbursts and vengeance. They are also fascinating, whether Greek, Roman, Norse, Hawaiian or Indian.
  1. Art Projects

    • Zeus is the supreme diety in Greek mythology.

Students who study any of the mythological figures may find great pleasure in interpreting the characters through art. The more creative, the better. A teacher could have students create a poster depicting the character in his place of authority, develop an ad for a product used by a specific mythological being, or lay out the cover of a magazine related to the love life of a specific god or hero. Students could create shoebox dioramas showing scenes from a character's history or gather and display a set of tangible items symbolic of the character's life and activities.

    Performance Projects

    • Students who feel comfortable performing in front of an audience could write and perform a monologue, stand-up comedy routine, puppet show or television commercial based upon a mythological figure. For these projects they could work alone or in groups. They could dress up as a favorite god or goddess and play "Deity for a Day" by remaining in character the entire school day. They could dress as the mythological character and deliver an informative speech to younger children.

    Other Projects

    • An industrious project for an older student to take on could be the creation of a new set of immortals based upon, and having similar traits as, the legendary Greek gods and heroes. The student would create, describe and draw the characters, write several myths about them, identify where they are in their family tree and write a character sketch for each one created.

    Projects Using Technology

    • Students can create powerful multimedia projects by using technology.

Today's educational thrust for students is technology. As school systems introduce children to learning in the 21st century, it smiles upon teachers who assign projects involving elaborate web design and PowerPoint presentations. Students can build powerful multimedia character projects by combining technology, images and information from the World Wide Web and their own understanding of mythological figures.
