Lighting Projects

Lighting encompasses everything from tiny light emitting diodes in electronics to massive Klieg lights for industrial applications. Having students understand how the various lights work and how to use them can help them with any movie production or electronics design.
  1. Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)

    • Anyone can make LEDs, not just electricians. Give the students simple alarm clocks and have them take them apart. Then let them choose a button to give an LED light to. Have the students drill a hole near the button and then attach the wire leads of the LED to the button's leads. Then glue the LED bulb in the hole and close the clock back up. Now press the button and watch as the LED comes on. Because LEDs use so little power, you can attach them to virtually any circuit without causing it to fail.

    Prisms

    • Make sure all the students have laser proof goggles on before starting this experiment. Place a series of lasers on one side of an optical work bench. Then let the students place prisms along the path of the lasers. Turn the lasers on and watch as the lasers bounce around and split apart. Let the students rearrange the prisms on the fly to see what color combinations they can make and how they can bend the light. This shows how various colors are actually comprised of other colors mixed together.

    Ultraviolet Light

    • Write a message on a piece of cardboard with invisible ink. Then show the students how a UV light can pick up invisible ink as well as various kinds of stains. Then have the students try out various other liquids that dry clear to see if the UV light will pick it up. This is to show that the visible light spectrum is not the only light.

    Reflective Mirrors

    • Show the students how modern lights use reflective mirrors to focus the light in a certain direction, like in a flashlight. Have the students then design a mirror out of cardboard and aluminum foil. Use a light meter to test which student's design reflects the most light.
