Wire Feed Welding Instructions

In welding processes using wire, wire feeds down through the welding gun cable, along with the shielding gas, and is deposited on the base metal. Purchase a high-quality precision wire that you can easily install into the wire feeder and that will not cause too much spatter. If you have not worked with a wire feed before, consult a wire feed installation guide; putting the spool of wire on your machine properly is critical to making a successful weld.

Instructions

    • 1

Check your wire spool, visually, for rust.

    • 2

Put the wire spool onto the axle of the welding machine, next to the wire feed rollers.

    • 3

Line up the pin, on the back side of the axle, with the hole in the spool of wire.

    • 4

Fully release the release tensioning mechanism that holds the feed/drive rollers together.

    • 5

Hand-feed the wire through the guide tube, over the drive rolls and over the start of the welding torch liner.

    • 6

Remove the contact tip from the end of the gun and feed wire through the welding torch by pulling the trigger on the welding gun. Turn the wire feed speed adjustment up, if you wish, to increase the rate at which the wire moves through the welding torch.

    • 7

Touch the end of the welding wire to the surface to be welded, and fire the welding torch to begin the process of welding. For thinner base metals, use a wavelike torch motion, and for thicker metals, weld in a straighter line.
