Welding Related Projects

Carrying out welding-related projects helps you practice welding skills in a fun and productive way. Welding is a fabrication process that joins metals, often by using heat, and is highly useful for both indoor and outdoor projects. Welding is used to make useful tools and appliances. When welding, work in a well-ventilated area to protect yourself from fumes, and wear a welding mask and protective clothing.
  1. Outdoor Projects

    • Welding is used to create appliances for the outdoors, as varied in use and process of creation as a grill and a mailbox. To create your own grill, you need to obtain a fire pit, measure its exact circumference or diameter, and purchase a metal frame with the same dimensions. Cut metal sticks to fit the length and width of the frame. You can weld your metal sticks across the face of your frame to create your cooking surface, and place the frame/cooking surface on top of your fire pit. To make a mailbox, weld a circular or square piece of tubing, of appropriate height for your mailbox, to a stainless steel flange. You can weld or bolt your actual mailbox to the flange, and embellish your mailbox stand according to your tastes.

    Workshop Projects

    • You can use welding to create welding accessories, such as a welding support stand, a welding cutting table, or an anvil stand. To make a welding table, you will need two stainless steel panels, four steel beams, and two stainless steel strips. Weld one steel beam to each end of both stainless steel panels. Weld one stainless steel strip to one side of each of the panels. Then, weld the two stainless steel strips together.

    In-Home Decorative Projects

    • In-home decorative projects like bookends and artwork for potted plants, usually requires minimal welding of delicate pieces of metal, followed by extensive decoration. For instance, to create serviceable bookends, weld flat stock steel together at 90-degree angles. Embellish your bookends by painting them, adding decorations or other material to weld. You could start with horseshoes and decorative metal, thus creating a conversation piece for decoration or as a gift. Similarly, to make plant-pot artwork, cut leaf shapes out of a thin steel sheet and weld them to a steel "stem."

    Welding Projects for Gardens

    • Welding projects for gardens include statue-welding and fountain-welding. Copper and iron rods welded together create the outline of a fairy silhouette, while a pillar of wrought iron welded to a wrought-iron claw conjures up Gothic statues. Create a modern fountain by welding metal blocks in a "staircase" shape, with a large bowl on the bottom and a small bowl on the top.
