Preschoolers can pretend they're different people, objects and animals, so feature them in a play or short skit where they get to act out a class rule. Dramatize the rule of being quiet during nap time by having students pretend to be "quiet mouses." Choose one or two "sneaky cats" to crawl around listening for any sounds. When the lights are turned on, students scurry to a hiding spot. The "sneaky cats" count to 10 before crawling to find the mice. Once found, the students return to their original spots. The last "mouse" to be found gets to play the cat next. Students won't even notice how quiet they're being.
Take pictures of students following class rules. The pictures can be photographs of previous classes or your current group. Have students make a collage with pictures of one particular rule, like raising your hand, or more than one rule. Place drawing paper, stencils and stamps in an art center where children can decorate their collages. Put different drawings and pictures together to create a rules picture book for the class or individually authored books.
Dr. Jean Feldman, also known as Dr. Jean, is a notable early education author and composer of "rules rap" -- an attention-grabbing musical method for introducing classroom rules. Present visual aids in conjunction with the rap. Customize your approach to presenting the rules in a way that's developmentally appropriate and of interest to your class, the Scholastic website suggests. Create movements that coincide with each "rule" rap based on the input from your students.
When you catch your students obeying the rules, either individually or collectively, use a chart to record the frequency and as a display for the class. Cut out templates of cars and place the child's name and picture on it. Make a racetrack on poster board. When you see a student following a rule, move his car closer to the finish line. Place colored cotton balls or jumbo marshmallows into a jar each time the class participates in a rule. Once the jar is full, the class is eligible for a prize of your choosing.
