Meet with the student, their parents and a speech/language pathologist, if your preschool has one on staff, to discuss the speech or communication impairment. Determining the cause of the impairment will help determine the type of software, such as text-to-speech programs, that is best suited to the student's needs.
Schedule a time for the student to become familiar with the software they will be using, ideally during non-school hours. Ask the speech/language pathologist to attend so she can help the student. Time alone with the software without distractions from other students will help the student become comfortable using the program.
Incorporate the text-to-speech software into lessons and activities. Having students use the program during interactive class time will allow them to contribute to the discussion and answer questions.
Allow students to use instructional software, such as programs designed for ESL students, during individual study time. Ask the speech/language pathologist if they can arrange daily one-on-one time with the student to further help with the instruction.
Meet with the student, parents and speech/language pathologist at regular intervals to assess the software's effectiveness and ensure it is challenging for the student, but not too difficult.
