Calendars provide numerous ways to teach math skills. Print some blank calendars to keep in a notebook. For counting, have the children fill in the dates. Fill in upcoming events and have children add and subtract the number of days before they get to go to the movies. Divide the days into hours and multiply how many the student has left to study for a test. Other number games such as Sudoku or memorizing multiplication facts can be printed and worked on during times of boredom such as going to the doctor's office or waiting in lines.
Print alphabet word books that children will take with them and will fit easily in a pocket. Each page will have one letter of the alphabet. As they run errands with you, encourage them to write down as many new words as possible on the correct letter page, especially words they have never seen before. Make a game of it. The more words they collect, the more points they earn. If they look up a word they don't know, they earn bonus points. Points can be turned in for special privileges. Go over the words they find, and make sure they can read those words and understand what they mean.
The Enchanted Learning website offers printable crafts, games and worksheets for all grade levels. Print up a worksheet about insects and see if your child can go into the backyard and find those listed on the sheet. He can color the pictures according to what he finds find outside.
Print an outline of a state and have the child fill in details and facts about the state, such as drawing pictures of the flag and state flower and bird. Collect the pages from all the students and put in a States notebook for referencing when they have social studies homework.
File Folder games can fit any theme and are easy to make. Determine what skills need to be learned, such as grammar or reading. For example, create a game in which your student is to make a singular word into a plural with an "s" or "es." Print up several dog pictures with a word on each dog. Glue the dogs to the folder. Now print several bones with the different plural endings. Cut out and laminate them for durability. The student will match the proper endings with the words. There are so many different folder games that can be made and used to help students master skills they are struggling with in school, and they can be stored in a file box for easy access.
