Notify your county's school board of your intent to homeschool. This means providing your name and address, as well as the ages and grade levels of your children, to the superintendent. You can find sample intent letters on the West Virginia Home Educators Association website.
Provide the superintendent with a copy of your high school diploma or an equivalent document.
Provide an outline of your intended educational plan for the year.
Select a curriculum, create your own or request books from your local school board. You are allowed to use public school textbooks for free if you wish. However, many families prefer the freedom of choosing their own educational materials.
Decide when you want to begin homeschooling, and get started.
Plan to provide the results of an annual academic assessment for your child, which you will submit to the school board by June 30 of the current academic year. The academic assessment can take the form of standardized testing, portfolio review or an alternative means of assessment as agreed upon by you and the county superintendent.
