Gather up information about the subjects your child studied during the year. Write a summary of the topics covered and the course content.
Get samples of the child's work. These samples could include large projects such as reports or science projects.
Make a list of all of the books your child read and all of the field trips you took.
Write a one- to two-page narrative that covers what the child learned that year and how he learned it. The narrative should cover all of the documents you are including in your portfolio.
Arrange these items in a three-ring binder or scrapbook. Include pictures of activities and notes on what was happening in the picture. If your state requires you to submit a portfolio at the end of the year, make sure you include any other state-required information.
Gather the portfolios from each year of your child's high school education. If you have not made portfolios for each year, you will need to find information about the subjects and activities for each year.
Obtain a list of required information from the college where your child is applying. This list will cover what needs to be in the portfolio and can vary from school to school. Most will require you to write out some type of transcript or go over the subjects your child learned and how he learned them.
Compile all of the information the college requires. Include examples of your child's work and summaries of the subjects he studied.
Write a narrative that covers the major subjects and projects your child studied throughout his high school career.
Place all of the information in a three-ring binder or scrapbook and submit it to the college, unless the college requires a digital portfolio. A digital portfolio is created on the computer and transferred as a file to the college. You may need to scan information into your computer to add it to the portfolio.
