Contact your local school district to find out what you need to teach your children according to their grade level. Request paperwork specifically listing the guidelines for your state. You will also need to find out what you need to do as the teaching parent to be in compliance with the Mississippi state laws regarding education, which may include standardized testing. Some school districts allow homeschooling families to borrow curriculum and/or access to the school district's facilities for their usage.
Call HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Group) for written information regarding any additional information for the state of Mississippi. They may be able to offer additional assistance, legally or financially, while you are homeschooling your children. They have support staff ready to assist the homeschooling family if they need any help or encouragement.
Locate homeschooling groups in your area. There are usually several, both Christian and nondenominational, that are knowledgeable regarding much of what is needed to know regarding homeschooling in the state of Mississippi. It is to your and your children's benefit to join one of these groups for additional support and assistance, group lessons, group sports teams and a variety of other activities that you may wish to participate in. Some families choose to partner up and teach their children together, which will give the homeschooling parent additional support and assistance.
Discuss curriculum choices with the leader of your local homeschooling group. He or she would be your best source of locating curriculum that is approved in the state of Mississippi. He or she would be able to inform you of any curriculum sales in your area. Curriculum sales events may include books and other curriculum materials, as well as instructional DVDs. Additional resources may also be available, such as foreign language courses and science and art courses and materials. At these events you will be able to learn of the experiences of other parents in your state and gain knowledge of the legalities in the state of Mississippi that you may not be aware of.
