How do I Get Started Homeschooling in Texas?

Different states have different regulations when it comes to homeschooling. Texas is one of the least strict states in the nation with their homeschool laws. As a result, starting a homeschool is easy to do. In Texas, homeschools are considered private schools; therefore, they do not have to follow the laws in the Texas Education Code. The only legal requirements you will need to adhere to are regarding the child's age during school attendance and the core subjects taught.

Instructions

    • 1

Inform your school that you will be homeschooling your children. This is just a courtesy as Texas does not require you to report your homeschool. Children are to be schooled, homeschooled or otherwise from the ages of 6 through 17 in the state of Texas.

Choose a curriculum that covers the state-required subjects at a minimum. Texas requires that reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and citizenship be taught to all grade levels of children regardless of where they attend school. Make sure your homeschool program covers at least these core subjects. The type of curriculum you develop is your personal decision and you can also hire tutors and other parents to teach if you like. It must be a visual curriculum, which means there are written materials that can be seen by school district officials if needed.

Keep your schoolwork and records in case of inquiry from the school district. While there is no requirement to report attendance or to administer testing, district officials are required to make sure that children are being educated. These school officials may at any time inquire about your curriculum. As long as you are teaching the core subjects, they will be satisfied.
