How to Locate Information About a Defunct or Closed School

Over the course of time, some schools may be forced to close because of low enrollment or budget difficulties. If you are a graduate of a school that has since closed, obtaining academic or financial aid records can be very difficult. While state laws vary, schools are generally required to register with a state agency responsible for regulating educational institutions. These state agencies maintain lists of defunct and closed schools. Obtaining information about a closed school requires contacting the appropriate state agency.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the state agency responsible for regulating educational institutions. The National Center for Education Statistics maintains an online list (see Resources) of the education agency in each state.

    • 2

Navigate to the website of the education agency in the state where the school was located. Some states, such as Indiana, publish an online list of defunct schools. including the name, address and year the school's certification was revoked. Other states do not publish this information.

Call the education agency in the state where the school was located. You will need to contact the appropriate state agency if you are looking for an academic record at a closed school or information about a closed school in a state that does not publish this information.

    • 4

File the appropriate records request. Your state education agency will direct you to the appropriate agency responsible for maintaining student records for closed schools. In some states, including Indiana and Florida, the state or local education agency maintains records for closed schools. In other states, including North Carolina and New Jersey, the state archives maintain these records.
