How Can Homeschoolers Make Their Own Student IDs?

Many states have truancy laws that require that all children under the age of 18 who are old enough to attend school must be in class between certain hours during the local school year. However, some students are homeschooled and do not follow the same schedule that their peers who attend physical schools do. In some situations, this can pose a problem if your student is out of the home without you when he should be in school. To help prevent issues with truancy laws, a homemade school ID card can help.
  1. Picture

    • Just like any other identification card, a homeschool student ID card will need a picture of your student. A recent picture is the best option because children's looks change quickly. The proper photo for a student ID should be a simple headshot with a plain background. Hang a sheet to take the photograph if you do not have space on a plain wall. A professional photograph also works as long as it is recent.

    Information

    • Placing the proper information on the student ID card is important if you need to use the card for student discounts or to prove that you are homeschooling. Choose a name for your homeschool. The name can be something simple, such as "Last Name School," or more creative, such as "Farm Homeschool" if you live on a farm or "Kitchen Table Academy" after the teaching location. If you work with a homeschool co-op, include that name as well. Other important information for your ID card includes your student's name, address and grade level.

    Set Up

    • To make your own homeschool ID cards, you must open your word processing or photo editing software. Set the file to the dimensions of 3 inches by 2 1/2 inches. The homeschool card can be designed any way you choose. Select a background color and paste your child's photograph onto the card. Input the information you wish to include on your student ID in a color that stands out from the background color. Make sure that the text does not overlap the photograph. Leave a space for your child to sign.

    Printing

    • Once you are satisfied with the way your student ID looks, print it on a piece of photo paper. Cut out the card along the edges, removing any white paper. If you have more than one student and need multiple cards, print them all on the same page. After your student has signed the ID card, laminate it with a home laminator or self-laminating plastic. This will ensure that the card lasts for the entire school year.
