A Proper MLA Bibliography

The Modern Language Association (MLA) publishes its guidelines for including citations and bibliographies. These guidelines deal with all print, online and other media sources whose information is used in writing material such as research papers.
  1. Formatting

    • Double space throughout the entire bibliography. "Works Cited" should be the heading and is always centered at the top. List sources in alphabetical order based on author. Each new entry begins in the left margin with subsequent lines being indented by half an inch.

    Book Entries

    • Write the author's last name first, followed by a comma and the first name. Follow with the title of the book underlined. End with the publisher and year. If there are two authors, list the names in the order they appear on the title page.

    Magazine and Newspaper Articles

    • Start with the name of the author of the article. Then list the article's title, the magazine's title, date of publication and on which pages the article appears in the magazine. Newspapers also carry this format, except the paper's version should be listed with the date.

    Online Sources

    • To cite an entire site, list the title of the site underlined with editor, date, name of sponsor and date site was accessed. Follow the same format when citing documents, except for listing the title of the webpage before the title of the site.
