How to Cite Dollars and Cents in APA Styles

The APA publication manual is a resource for students and researchers that provides direction on how to properly format essays, research papers, theses and papers for submission to academic journals. The American Psychological Association administers and manages the style guide, which is used frequently in the academic world. It contains examples of how to cite works by other authors whose work a researcher uses in the compilation of his own paper. It also provides guidance on how to properly space a paper, what font(s) to use and how to cite units of measurement including dollars and cents.

Instructions

    • 1

Express a sum of money in whole numbers within the body of your paper to follow APA publication manual formatting rules. Format a sum of money with the dollar sign preceding it and a period in between the dollar and cents as follows: "Participants were paid $5.25 for their participation in this study's survey."

    • 2

Cite monetary amounts within the body of your paper in whole numbers as part of a direct quote from one of your research sources as follows: "According to Jones (2010), the average subway worker in New York earns $6.44 per hour."

    • 3

List any works that you cite in-text for monetary references as you would any other work - alphabetically by author last name in your Works Cited page at the end of your paper. Create Works Cited entries for every work you mention within the body of your paper, including works by single authors as follows: "Jones, D. (2010). Article title. Journal Title in Italics, Journal edition number in italics, page numbers."
