How to Insert Graphics Using MLA Format

When writing a paper, you will often use other people's ideas or research to back up a point. Whether that information comes in the form of text or graphics, it is important to provide the appropriate credit to that source. The Modern Language Association (MLA) guide is one of the most common ways to do this. Following MLA format when inserting graphics is very similar to citing other research.

Instructions

    • 1

Record certain information when saving graphics during research. Make note of the graphic's title, creator's name, where the graphic was located and the date you accessed the graphic.

    • 2

Insert the graphic into your document, making sure it is placed near the text where it is first referenced.

    • 3

Check to see if you referred to the graphic by any name, such as "Figure 1" or "Table 3," in the document's text and label the graphic accordingly.

    • 4

Write a parenthetical citation directly below the graphic in your paper. This citation should be written in the following format:

Source: "Graphic's title." Creator's Last name, First name. Name of website/publication/museum providing graphic. Date of Creation or Access.
