How to Format Fiction Writing Samples for Portfolio

As a collection of your greatest work, a writing portfolio can be incredibly important in your professional and academic life. Some colleges and universities require students to prepare portfolios to gain admission to writing programs. Writers also use portfolios to display their work and secure writing jobs. Format samples of your fiction writing to use in your portfolio and showcase your skills as a writer.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your strongest fiction, especially pieces that have been published. For longer pieces, such as novellas or novels, only use one to three chapter excerpts in your portfolio.

    • 2

Write your name and contact information in the top left corner of the first page of your portfolio.

    • 3

Write your last name and page number in the top right corner of every page in the rest of your portfolio.

    • 4

Write the title and your name in the middle of the first page of each piece. The first line of the story will start one line below your by-line.

    • 5

List the award history and publishing credits for each piece on the bottom of the last page.

    • 6

Indent the first line of each paragraph. Use 1-inch margins and double-space the text. Choose a font style that is easy to read, such as Courier New or Times New Roman. Proofread each piece carefully.
