How to Study for Nursing Classes

Getting your nursing degree is not an easy task.Good study habits that fit you and your needs are always good to develop and it's especially important for those taking nursing classes to dedicate enough time to the material. Showing up to class and taking the notes is a good start, but it's just a start as far as study habits go.

Eliminate as many distractions from your study time as possible. Don't have the television or the radio on, and if necessary don't study at home. Go out to a cafe or a local sandwich shop and bring your materials with you. Being in public can sometimes be a major focusing agent because you don't have all of your familiar concerns to get in the way of concentrating.

    • 2

Read through the chapter and hi-lite portions that you consider to be important. If you have a used textbook, the previous owner may have already done this for you. It helps draw your eye to important points and to remember what it is you're reading through. Give your class notes the same treatment so that the subjects you read about and the ones you jotted notes about reinforce each other.

Go back over the chapter's goals and expectations, which should be listed in your syllabus. These will likely be study questions, and the answers should definitely be added to your study materials. Also, make outlines of each chapter's relevant information based on your notes, reading and the facts that have been repeated as important. This is the information you really need to know.

Study in small chunks. Dedicate an hour or maybe two and call it a night. Cramming everything into your head in a 6- or 8-hour marathon just before the test might get you to pass, but it won't be as effective as repetitive studying on a daily basis.
