Scan the chapter before you begin reading. Scanning the information will help you identify what is being taught in the particular chapter. Read the summaries, objective questions, graphics and images to set up the chapter before you start reading.
Study the textbook in a quiet location, away from distractions, so you can apply your full attention to the lesson. As you read the chapter, write down in a notebook or on notecards keywords and lists or types of medical diseases and conditions that you will study. Once you are done with the chapter, you will have your study notes to prepare for a test.
Review the chapter after you complete the entire section to brush up on anything you might have missed in the beginning. Read the objectives once again and see if you can answer them based on your completed reading. Test questions are often based on objectives to make sure you understand the information.
Take sample tests or answer questions provided at the end of each chapter. Practice the tests until you are able to answer them without looking up answers in the textbook. Enlist the help of a friend to ask you questions from the end of each chapter. Saying the answer out loud will increase your understanding of a topic.
