How to Mark Textbooks

When you are studying for your next exam or if you need to write a research paper on a subject that is covered thoroughly in your textbook, it might be easier to study or gather information if you mark your textbook. You can mark a textbook by highlighting, underlining, circling or making notes. However, if you plan to sell your textbook for someone else to use in the future, you should always use a pencil and erase your markings before giving up the textbook.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the textbook passages entirely before you mark them up. This will help you mark only the information you really need.

    • 2

Use a highlighter to emphasize key facts, terms or headings. Avoid highlighting entire sentences or passages.

    • 3

Underline the main point of sentences that are relevant to your studying or research using a pen or pencil.

    • 4

Circle key terms that you need to memorize. This makes finding them in the text easier.

    • 5

Use a shorthand system for marking key areas of the text. For example, you might write "ex" to stand for example, "mem" to stand for memorize or "def" to stand for definition.

    • 6

Make notes about the text in the margins. Your notes might be paraphrasing, pulling out key information or reminding yourself how you want to use the information in a paper.
