How to Sell Used Textbooks to Stores

Going to college can prove to be a major life expenditure if we account for the high costs of tuition, textbooks, housing, transportation, food and other living expenses. With proper planning and budgeting we can curb many of these expenses to save tons of money -- especially when it comes to textbooks. College textbooks fall in the $100 to $200 price range. The national average is currently $900/year, but depending on the course load and the number of classes you're taking, you may have to spend as much as $1,200 per year. In order to save money on textbooks you can purchase used textbooks (which are often marked with great discounts), purchase from online retailers, or opt for textbook rentals on a semester basis. Another popular method to save money on textbooks is to sell them at the end of the semester.

Like with any other bargain, it is best to get a few different quotes for textbook buy-back programs before selling the textbook. Provide the store or online retailer with the ISBN to get a price quote, and then compare.

    • 2

Visit your college bookstore and see if they have a textbook buy-back program. The advantage of selling your book to the college bookstore is the convenience of being able to sell your book on campus, and the immediacy of the payment (no waiting for checks or electronic payments to clear).

If you're selling your book to an online source such as Barnes & Noble, Textbook.com, or the like, then you need to follow these steps:

      -Visit their website

-Go to the Sell Textbooks page

-Enter the ISBN number for each textbook

-Accept the quote price if the textbook is accepted for buyback

-Enter your personal information, including email for payment

-Print the pre-paid shipping label (if provided by the online retailer) and receipt for the transaction

-Prepare the package by including the textbook and transaction details in an envelope (preferably with bubble wrap lining on the inside). Place the shipping label on the outside of the envelope and fasten the envelope.

Once your textbook is received by the online retailer and you get the payment, deposit the check to receive your funds.
