How to Study for an Adult Daycare Certificate

An adult daycare worker is tasked with interacting and providing care for elderly individuals whose normal caregivers are unavailable during the day. More and more job opportunities are becoming available for adult daycare workers, as the number of individuals over the age of 65 will be more than 20 percent of the population by 2050, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Joining this profession requires knowledge of how to care for older individuals, which can be obtained by studying for and then receiving an adult daycare certificate.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a course in caring for adults in a day care setting. Read through course materials, and review your book and other materials you've collected throughout the course duration. Read through any parts that are unclear, and make sure you understand vocabulary terms, best practices and other bolded items in your book.

    • 2

Visit the website of your state's licensing agency for adult daycares to review what standards and practices the daycare is required to meet.

    • 3

Study with classmates. Form a study group with individuals from your adult daycare course. Review the information that will be on your certification test. Quiz each other, and get clarification on any information you are unsure about.

    • 4

Use flash cards. Make flash cards with important terms, practices, regulations and other items that may be on your certification test. Put the question on one side of the note card and the answer on the other side. This allows you to see the question, provide the answer and then check it to see if you're right.

    • 5

Volunteer in an adult daycare. If you don't have much experience in an adult daycare, find a local center where you can volunteer. Help the attendees participate in activities, or simply spend time chatting with them. This allows you to put what you learned in class into practice, which can help make it more memorable for the test.

    • 6

Prepare in advance. Don't wait until the last few days before the certificate test before you start studying. A few weeks before the exam, start reading through all of your course information and developing your flash cards. Study them for a few minutes periodically throughout each day. Arrange for your study group to meet a few times leading up to the test, or engage a friend to help quiz you. By the time the day of the test arrives, you'll be prepared to ace it without having to cram or pull an all-nighter.
