After you decide what language you want to learn, check out the bookstore. The bookstore will carry an array of language learning books and programs, such as Berlitz and Rosetta Stone, which offer extensive language learning programs to teach you the basics or help you master a language. Bookstores also usually carry language learning CDs that you can download onto your MP3 player for practice.
Join a language-learning website, such as LiveMocha, Babbel and BBC Languages. These websites offer free tools to help you learn language vocabulary, phrases and pronunciation.
Download some podcasts. By listening to podcasts for at least an hour a day you will be able to understand and speak a new language. The program iTunes offers hundreds of free podcasts that can help you learn vocabulary in your language. To download a podcast, open iTunes. Then search under "Podcasts." Type in what language you want to learn. If you don't have iTunes, check out World Languages Podcasting, Voices en Espanol or Learn Out Loud, a website that offers free language-learning downloads.
Watch videos. The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it. Watch television or videos online in the language that you wish to speak in order to learn how to converse with others. The BBC, Telemundo and PBS offer shows on television that can help you learn other languages. If you prefer online videos, watch YouTube, Netflix and BBC Languages, all which offer online videos that can help you learn a new language
Join a class online or at a nearby university. This is probably the most effective way to learn another language because you converse in a leaning environment. For instance, Berlitz offers on-site and online courses for beginners that want to learn a new language and most universities and high schools offer adult language classes at night. Check the ones in your community.
