How to Learn a New Language Speaking Only in the New Language

One of the ways that you can learn another language is by speaking only in that language. This is called immersion learning. This method is the same way babies learn to speak a language from adults. You can learn another language in this same manner by listening to another language and participating in it as you learn it.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign up for a class or program in which you can learn another language in the immersion style. You usually need to go to the country that speaks the language to do this, but in some cities and states there are immersion schools and classes where you can learn through listening and speaking. Find an "immersion" program or school and enroll.

    • 2

Take notes each time you listen to the instructors or other students speak. Don't worry if you aren't spelling things correctly at the beginning. Just begin by taking down any information that you pick up by listening. If the class begins by introducing themselves, you should write down the words they are using to do so. Don't worry about a literal translation, just write down the phrase you've learned and go from there.

    • 3

Point at objects to begin with and let people tell you what they are. Try not not speak any English at all, and mimic their phrases and words. As soon as you know how to say "What's that?" you can use it instead of just pointing. The more that you are told what the names for things are, the more your brain will begin to understand not only the vocabulary you are learning, but the sentence structure as well.

    • 4

Explain what you mean using the vocabulary you understand. Think of yourself as a small child. If they don't know how to say something, they use the closest words they know. For example, if you don't know how to say "I'm going there tomorrow," but you do know how to say "I go" and you also know the word for tomorrow, you can say "I go tomorrow." The person you are learning from will correct you and teach you how to say it in the future tense.

    • 5

Listen to and speak the language as often as you can, for as much time as possible. Listen to radio, television, and movies, and read books even if you don't understand everything. The longer you are exposed to a language, the faster you will pick it up.
