When applying to schools, pay attention to the type of program each school offers. Not all schools that offer aircraft maintenance degrees offer a distance learning program. Many schools also offer different degrees, so choose a school based on the degree you hope to acquire. Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology offers three distance programs, specializing in all three aircraft maintenance degrees. Bryer State College offers an associate, bachelor's or master's degree in this field.
Distance aircraft maintenance degrees offer a bachelor's degree, associate degree and certificate degree. Classes include management, psychology and safety classes. Depending on the school, students may choose a virtual classroom environment or an on-demand video to follow at their own pace. Though students may never meet teachers in person, many colleges offer mentor programs, and the same resources available to on-campus students are available online.
Students entering an aircraft maintenance program should have a high school diploma or GED. To complete the distance learning program, applicants must attend classes online and have access to the Internet, a computer and an email address. Schools require students to obtain an Airframe and Powerplant certificate before applying. Prospective students must possess an attention to detail, an analytical eye and a desire to obtain ongoing training.
The Occupational Outlook Handbook reported as of May 2008 that the average aircraft maintenance worker earned approximately $24.71 per hour. Duties include aircraft inspection, repairs and preflight checks. Aircraft maintenance professionals work in outdoor locations without heating or air conditioning, such as on the tarmac or in hangars, and they may need to adjust to high-stress situations to keep up with flight schedules and timely repairs and maintenance. Students entering this field will need to obtain Federal Aviation Association certification before applying for a job. Certification requirements include hands-on tests as well as written and oral examinations.
