Analyze the needs of your courses to determine which ones would benefit the most by distance learning. For example, a course with a surplus of students and a shortage of teachers could use distance learning to correct the imbalance.
Examine the students who would be taking the class to determine if distance learning is practical. Determine if students would be taking the class in a classroom or from home and if your target students all have access to the computers and other tools needed for distance learning.
Set up your support staff. You may only have one official teacher for a distance course but you need a technical team to set up the web camera and upload everything to the appropriate websites. You also need supervisors in each classroom that would be streaming the lessons to keep an eye on the students in the class.
Verify you have the appropriate technology needed for a distance course, such as web servers, cameras and computers.
Establish how the instructor can communicate with individual students and if you will use e-mail or set up online chat sessions. The phone is another option but it would be difficult to reach multiple students at once unless it was a conference call.
Run a practice session before introducing acting students. This gives the teacher practice in establishing a curriculum for people who are not actually in the room and this also allows the technology team a chance to work out any glitches that could arise when the class begins.
