Distance Learning English Degrees

Distance learning is another way to earn a degree without having to go to a school or college. If you have work or family commitments, or if you are experiencing health problems and need flexibility, you can use distance learning to study from home at a comfortable pace. You can find accredited distance learning English degree programs offered by colleges and universities all over the country and internationally. Course materials can be mailed in print form or may be studied online.
  1. International Correspondence Schools (ICS)

    • The school was established in 1890 and incorporated in the USA in 1901 and is the world's largest distance learning organization. Its head office is in Glasgow, Scotland. It offers a wide variety of subjects to choose from including a BA (Honors) in English Literature. Studies use history and cultural and critical contexts to teach students analytical thinking skills, understanding of human thought and expression in words and speech. Students study novels, poems, plays and film to develop the ability to evaluate and apply theories and methodologies. Course materials may be sent via mail or uploaded onto a computer and studied online. Assessments include a mixture of exams and coursework that include essays, projects and presentations. Tuition costs can be paid monthly, over a period of 12 to 32 months. Tuition costs are broken down to four stages throughout the study period. The costs range from £1,469 for the first stage and up to £3,290 for stage four.

    Ashford University

    • Founded in 1918, the university offers affordable degree programs available via online access or print form. Ashford is regionally accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and offers a Bachelor of Arts in English. The program of study equips a graduate for entering into careers such as copy editor, editor, technical writer, educator and more. Students learn critical thinking skills through a study of literature and culture and communication. College credits for past study can be transferred to help fulfill your degree requirements at Ashford. Tuition costs (as of 2011) are $372 per credit. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

    The Open University (OU)

    • The OU is a leader in distance learning and offers degree programs to students in the UK and in Europe. Course materials can be accessed online and in print form and include CDs and DVDs. Assignments are marked by tutors who also give detailed feedback via mail, by phone or online. Courses offered include undergraduate courses in English, interdisciplinary courses with a literature component and post graduate courses such as the MA English part 1 and the literature dissertation. BA honors are offered in English language and literature. Tuition costs vary greatly depending on geographical location and course chosen.

    The University of London

    • The acclaimed university offers worldwide access to its degree and diploma programs which include a BA and diploma in English. The BA degree can be completed in three to eight years and tuition costs are (as of 2011), £3,313. Study materials can be obtained in print form and electronically.
