Fiberglass-Cutting Tools

Fiberglass must be cut to the right dimension to make it effective. There are specific tools that are used to ensure this precision is obtained. Using the correct equipment to cut a fiberglass material also reduces chances of injuries.
  1. Fiberglass Shear

    • A fiberglass shear resembles a pair of scissors. It has a strong, thick pair of handles that enable you to cut right through the fiberglass. The fiberglass shear also has rubber coating on its handles to reduce slippage while using it. You can use this tool to create horizontal and vertical cuts and to trim off excess fiberglass. When using a fiberglass shear, a tape measure is required to get the accurate dimension of the fiberglass being cut.

    Duct Knife

    • The duct knife resembles a double blade knife with one smooth edge and one jagged edge. The jagged side grinds the fiberglass, while the smooth end polishes it to make a smooth cut. It is a handy tool when used to cut out a piece of fiberglass from the center of a larger piece. A duct knife is used together with a hand saw to cut out larger sections.

    Cast Saws

    • Cast saws are used to remove fiberglass casts. The cast saw has a circular blade that vibrates. It is designed in such a way as to reduce chances of your skin getting cuts and bruises as you use it. However, you can contact a skin burn if too much pressure is applied on the saw.

    Fine-Toothed Hacksaw

    • A fine-toothed hacksaw is used for cutting small quantities of fiberglass. The tool is deployed by supporting the backside of the rod to prevent rupture of the fiberglass while pulling the blade back toward you. A fine-toothed hacksaw is most effective when the fiberglass is resting on a piece of wood at the point of cut.
