In order to calculate your ecological, or carbon, footprint, you will want to visit one of the many footprint calculator analysis websites available online. For the purpose of this demonstration, we will use the footprint calculator located at "Footprint Network." These resources will help you discover the biggest areas of resource consumption and give tips to reduce your ecological footprint.

      Visit the footprint calculator located on the "Footprint Network" homepage. Select your location. Click the "begin" button. Sign in if you are a previous user, otherwise create a new account. Select an avatar to represent you during the process, or randomly generate an avatar. Click "OK" to continue.

      Answer the first question on how often you eat animal-based products, such as eggs, poultry, meat, etc. Click "OK" to continue.

      Answer the second question on how often you eat food grown more than 200 miles away. Click "OK" to continue.

      Answer the third question on how much trash you produce compared to an average American. Click "OK" to continue.

      TDdescribe your housing situation and provide a description of your home. Answer truthfully and honestly. Click "OK" to continue.

      Answer the question on whether or not you have electricity and on how many people live in your home. Click "OK" to continue.

      Calculate the size of your home in square feet. Click "OK" to continue.

      Calculate how many hours a week you drive, as both a passenger and a driver, and answer the question accordingly. Click "OK" to continue. Follow up this question with your vehicle's gas mileage. Click "OK" to continue.

      Answer whether or not you use public transit, and if so, how many hours per week is spent on public transit. Click "OK" to continue. The next question will ask you how much you fly per year, calculated in hours. Click "OK" to continue.

      Receive your results. Your results will be broken down into four parts: a comparative footprint with others, a breakdown of resources, how many acres it takes to support your lifestyle and the ability to further explore these factors.
