How to Find Out If Your Gold Is Fake

Gold is a popular metal used in everything from jewelry to statues. There are four different karats: 10K (42 percent gold), 14K (59 percent gold), 18K (75 percent gold) and 24K (pure gold). Anything less than 10K or 42 percent gold is considered fake or fool's gold. ABC News' 20/20 did an investigation in 2004 where they bought jewelry advertised at 10K at 22 different stores. Out of those 22 stores, more than half lied about the carat of their gold. There are several methods to use in finding out if your gold jewelry is real or fake.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for color changes. If gold changes to black or green or leaves color on your skin it's low-quality or fake gold.

    • 2

Weigh the gold in your hand to make sure that it is heavy. If the object feels too light, it may be fool's gold. Gold is heavier than most other metals that are the same size.

    • 3

Try the bite test for gold coins. Bite down on the coin. If it doesn't get at least a little indent from your teeth, then it's fake.

    • 4

Check to see if there is a stamp on the piece stating the carat of the piece. In some countries, such as the United States, all gold has to be earmarked with the karat. If the piece doesn't have this mark, then it's fake.

Look for ragged edges. Ragged edges on gold bands often signify cheap material that the jeweler can't smooth out properly. Since gold is a soft metal, it's very easy to get completely smooth.
