Check with your academic department or superior for special instructions. Sometimes, departments, instructors or individual superiors will have specific requirements for citation style. These should supersede standard protocol when you are writing for that group or individual.
Collect all relevant information. While conducting your research, make note of the URL, the name of the website and page, the author, if there is one, the publication date and the date the page was accessed. Also collect any additional information required by your instructor or superior.
Record the citation. Cite the webpage and URL in the following manner: Author's last name, first initial, period, date of publication in parentheses, website title, article date, date information was retrieved, URL, period.
For example, an citation might look like this:
Smith, J. (2010). How to Cite a Site. Citing Guide 2010. Retrieved April 14, 2011, from http://www.abc-citing.com/citing.
Double-check your information. Once you have cited the website and URL, double-check to ensure that the information is accurate by checking your notes again and, if possible, visiting the website once again.
