Make sure you have a clean driving record. Most truck driving schools will want proof that you don’t have any accidents on your record for at least the last five years. Any charges of reckless driving will adversely affect your application.
Enroll in an accelerated truck driving program. Look for four-to-six-week courses available in your area. These intense courses involve spending eight hours a day, five days a week in training, according InfoBarrel. Training involves a combination of classroom work and driving experience, where you will start out sitting beside an experienced driver to watch how he does it.
Begin studying. Rather than waiting for an instructor to tell you to crack the books, get the materials ahead of time and start working before the class starts. Take notes, and write down questions you want to ask the instructor.
Go to all the classes, and get as much practice as you can. Taking a fast-track course may mean you have to work harder, but you will be able to become a trucker faster.
Take the test to get a commercial driver's license, known as a CDL. This exam involves both a written and a driving component. According to US Trucking Schools, you must have a CDL to operate a truck weighing more than 26,000 pounds.
Once you pass the test and get your CDL, you can apply for a job as a truck driver. Students who don’t pass the test the first time can take it again, but since you want to hit the road as soon as possible, get it right the first time.
