Complete your undergraduate degree. Almost all law schools require an undergraduate degree before they will consider your application.
Take the LSAT. It is a standardized test that law schools use in their application process. It tests your logical reasoning, reading comprehension and writing abilities. Study aids can be found at your local book store, and numerous companies offer prep classes for those that need it.
Finish law school. This is usually a three-year degree. It does not matter if you go to school in New Mexico or outside of the state. Either way, you will be able to practice within New Mexico, although you might have better job prospects if you go to school in the region.
Take the New Mexico state bar exam. This will allow you to practice law within New Mexico state courts. Most lawyers study for about three to four months before taking the exam. Test prep materials are available at bookstores, and numerous companies offer prep classes for those that want them.
Exam results will be posted in about three months. If you passed, you will be invited to a ceremony where you will be sworn in, after which you will be able to work as a lawyer within the New Mexico justice system.
