Meet the requirements. Universities often require that students meet certain conditions before becoming an RA, such as maintaining a good academic standing with a GPA at a certain level. The requirements can vary depending on where you are assigned to live and which university you are attending. Visit your university's website to make sure you fit the criteria for becoming an RA.
Apply to become an RA through your university's Office of Student Life and Housing department. Most universities provide downloadable applicant links via their website.
Provide outstanding references when applying. Making sure to have complete professional and personal references from associates on and off campus will benefit you in getting the job.
Live on campus. On-campus housing is not always guaranteed to RAs, which is essential to an RA's duties and to assisting students who need it urgently.
Manage your time and duties. Between classes and advising students, time management skills will be an important ability of an RA. Students who feel their RAs spend adequate time listening and evaluating their questions and needs will bring a positive experience to your work and show the staff your competency.
