RA Programming Ideas

A resident assistant is an important job held by college students in dormitories. On many campuses, they are simply known as RAs. RAs serve as hall supervisors, peer mediators and administrators for their assigned areas. Often, they have the task of planning and implementing certain programs for their hall. The programs generally focus on different aspects of college life and communal living. There are a wide variety of program ideas to consider.
  1. Ice Breaker

    • At the beginning of the academic year, it can be overwhelming for some students to move into a new place full of strangers. Plan an ice-breaker program once everyone has moved in, before classes begin. Use a common room in the dorm, or if it's a nice day, head outside to a courtyard or lawn. Give a speech about your role as RA. There are a large number of ice-breaking and getting-to-know-you games suitable for play with large groups. It can also be useful to throw in some team building activities into the mix to encourage floor unity.

    Healthy Eating

    • Leaving home for the first time is an overwhelming thing for many students. They are faced with many new tasks such as adjusting to a rigorous academic schedule, balancing time and meeting other people. It's easy to let healthy eating fall by the wayside. Plan a program that focuses on nutrition and meal planning. Instead of planning a general program, make it applicable to your school. Invite a nutritionist or health counselor familiar with the campus dining options to speak. Before the program, visit four or five of the closest dining halls or food courts to your dorm. Take note of the offerings and make a list of the healthiest options. Make colorful posters to present your findings. Offer an incentive, such as some type of free, healthy snack for those who attend the program.

    Community Service

    • With the demands of academics and social obligations, it's easy to become very focused on yourself in college. Plan a program that gets those in the dorm thinking and helping others by working on a community service project together. This also provides a way for those in the dorm to get to know each other and bond over a common goal. Find an organization local to your area to assist. Options could be anything from holding a food drive to adopting a family around the holidays to building a house. Hold a meeting with those on the dorm before choosing the project to get everyone's input and ideas.
